Do I need to have my fire alarm system serviced if it hasn’t gone off?

Yes. Even if your system hasn’t triggered an alarm, it still needs regular maintenance to ensure it’s functioning correctly. British Standards (BS 5839) recommend servicing fire alarm systems at least twice a year. Regular checks help identify faults, ensure compliance, and maintain your legal obligations under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Can Spectrum maintain systems installed by other companies?

How do I know what kind of fire system my building needs?

Are wireless fire alarm systems reliable?

Yes, modern wireless fire alarm systems are highly reliable and fully compliant with British Standards. They’re ideal for heritage buildings, temporary sites, or complex layouts where cable installation is difficult. We use high-quality, EN 54-approved wireless systems with secure, monitored connections between devices.

What’s the difference between a conventional and an addressable fire alarm system?

Conventional systems divide your building into zones, but don’t pinpoint the exact location of a trigger. Addressable systems, on the other hand, can identify the specific device activated — making them more suitable for large or high-risk buildings where speed and accuracy matter. We’ll advise on the right type based on your property’s needs.

Do I need a fire alarm system in my apartment block if each flat has its own detector?

In most multi-occupancy residential buildings, especially those over 11 metres in height, a communal fire alarm system is required for shared areas such as corridors and stairwells. New guidance may also recommend additional systems depending on building height, cladding, or evacuation strategy. We’ll help you assess your building and comply with the latest regulations.

Can fire systems be integrated with building management systems (BMS)?

Yes. Most modern fire detection and suppression systems can be integrated with your building’s BMS to provide centralised control, real-time monitoring, and remote fault reporting. What happens if there’s a fault on the system out of hours?
